Setting up Smartrigger Dualzone HiHat (Piezo/Switch)

Postby Poldi-1 » Tue Feb 08, 2011 12:56 pm

I can't seem to find out what it takes to get my new Smartrigger DualZone HiHat working. It has a film switch on the rim.
My settings are in the attached pic.
On the MIDI log I can see that I only trigger the dampened Note (#27 in my settings) no matter where I hit the cymbal, and I can produce Aftertouch messages when pressing the film switch with my fingers. Footchicks work as well, but those are generated by CC4, right?
Can someone point me to the right settings?

Well yeah that's what I did - just forgot to set BNote but that is on 25 now (for testing)
Repeated the "Set All Bell/EdgeSw" procedure 3 times (hitting the bell/edge of my HiHat cymbal for 10-20 times each), but still the MIDI log only shows 3rd zone hits on the HiHat (Note 27 in my case).
Noticed that 3rd zone threshold has changed after the procedure, but thats it :)
Overall I'm confused with having 3rd zone hits and settings on a dual zone cymbal.

I cannot believe that Threshold on the Rim stayed at the default 30, and HighLevel on both the Head and Rim didn't go above 100 after following the procedure.
If is "Smartrigger DualZone" cymbal I don't get how you are going to get the 3rd zone from it.

It also says:

You may still need to slightly adjust Threshold and BThreshold on the Rim/Edge channels to fine tune the zone sepatation.

http://www.drum-tec.de/smartrigger-12-hihat-p-123.html
This is my HiHat, clearly labeled as DualZone and it has 1 Piezo in the middle and 1 film switch on the edge, connected with a stereo cable.
I loaded MD with default settings and started setting up only the HiHat cymbal again (settings in new pic). Here I get 3rd zone (#27) hits no matter where I strike the cymbal.
Then I start the "Set All EdgeSw" procedure - in there the hits are still 3rd zone (#27), sometimes aftertouch messages appear when I kinda "pressroll-hit" the edge faster. So I tried pressing the Rim switch with my fingers rather hard, which gave another Aftertouch message, but after that hits on the rim would be logged as head hit (#26).
Then I start the "Set All BellSw" procedure and get only head hits as well (#26). A bit better now that I get head hits, but the edge zone/switch doesn't react.
Retried this whole preocedure for some times - when I wouldn't press the edge switch with my hand only 3rd zone hits (#27) will be logged no matter where in the setup process or where I hit. Threshold has changed and HighLevelAuto has done it's work (see 2nd pic), and I have all Gains Low on...
Edit: on another try straight from the scratch I am here: When I press and hold hold the Switch pressed while "Set AllEdgeSw" is working and I hit Rim Hits are recognised, when I release the hand from the switch (Aftertouch off) it will register head hits.
Still I can't play 'em seperately...

Forget about the 3rd zone with a dual zone cymbal - all you can get from the settings in the 3rd zone section is Dampened Note. From MegaDrum Documentation in http://www.megadrum.info/content/pads-settings :
For piezo/switch 2 or 3 zones pads/cymbals only. Dampened note value. If a pad/cymbal is hit when the rim/edge switch is pressed then the note value is taken from DBNote rather than from Note of the head/bow input. By default it is equal to Note of the head/bow input.

BNote, ABNote and BThreshold for a dual piezo/switch cymbal/pad must be left at defaults, i.e. 0
Using 'Set All BellSw' on a dual piezo/switch cymbal/pad will definitely produce wrong settings.
You may only use 'Set All EdgeSw' procedure to set approximate Threshold level on the Rim/Edge input. After this "You may still need to slightly adjust Threshold ... on the Rim/Edge channels to fine tune the zone separation", i.e. (again from http://www.megadrum.info/content/pads-settings ):

For switch Rim/Edge inputs: Input switch threshold. Sets below which level the switch is detected as hit/pressed. ... The best way to set a correct threshold on a switch input is to use MIDI-OX to monitor 'aftertouch' MIDI messages. With a proper threshold value you should see 2 or 3 (dual zone or 3way/3 zone pad) 'aftertouch on' MIDI messages when you press the switch and 2 or 3 'aftertouch off' MIDI messages when you release the switch.

when the manual talks about Threshold in this case - what kind of a value is used there? Electrical signal as determined with HighLvlAuto? Just trying to get a reference point...
When I haven't set a 3rd zone note and did the SetAllEdgeSw procedure the Threshold wouldn't change a bit...

For a dual piezo/switch pad/cymbal with the Gain at default 4, Threshold for the edge input is in the range ~10-40.

When I haven't set a 3rd zone note and did the SetAllEdgeSw procedure the Threshold wouldn't change a bit...

Starting from all settings set at defaults, step by step, and very detailed, describe what you do to configure it.
