lowering number of inputs

if i dont want a box with 32 inputs on it etc. can i just omit some things and ground out a couple ic connections has anyone used just 16 of the inputs before or anything

You can certainly do this. E.g. for 16 inputs you need only first two MUXers (eithere 4051 in my schematics or 74HC4851 in Synthex's kit) You don't need to ground anything.

Just to be sure you understand, 16 inputs will just give you 8 stereo or 16 mono jack sockets to plug pads/cymbals into. Are you primarily building a mono kit?
