Do these settings seem "strange" to you?

Postby anttipi » Wed Jan 13, 2010 11:57 am

I'm trying to find the best dynamics for my mesh heads (Drum-Tec Diabolo) and I would appreciate some advice regarding Megadrum's settings.

Am I right in assuming that for these settings, generally, the lower the setting the better for the widest range of dynamics (that is, before you start to get crosstalk):
Crosstalk, Threshold, Retrigger, Dynamic Level, Dynamic Time. I also suppose Min Scan Time should be as low as possible until hit velocity detection starts to suffer?

I know you can only really judge a good setting by your ear, but I'm asking this because I'm a little confused: my settings seem very different from the ones I've seen here. On my snare, for example, I have crosstalk, threshold, retrigger, dynamic level and dynamic time all set to the lowest possible settings right now. Doesn't it sound a bit strange? And still I'm not getting any crosstalk (the snare is on a separate, very sturdy Tama stand).

I see Dmitri, for example, has (or has had) his Pintech at Dyn Level 3 with Dyn Time to maximum. I don't quite get the idea behind these two parameters: I don't seem to hear any noticeable difference whatever I have these settings at. And yes, I have read the documentation several times (which has been very helpful, btw).

Neither of these settings, except Threshold, have any effect on the dynamic range. They only effect re-triggering and false triggering suppression. The main thing to effect the dynamic range is the difference between HighLevel and Threshold - the bigger the better.

If your snare is on a different stand, you can set XTalk to 0. Retrigger, DynLevel and DynTime still have to be configured so that to allow good re-triggering for fast rolls and suppress false triggering.

I don't know how else to describe DynLevel and DynTime from how I described it in http://www.megadrum.info/content/pads-settings
I do notice a big difference between properly and improperly set DynLevel, DynTime and Retrigger. In short, the lower all those settings the better fast rolls are and the worse the false triggering is.

As I don't seem to be having any false triggering, I'll just leave those in the lowest settings then (maybe some fine tuning is needed).

Thanks for the advice! I'm really enjoying my Megadrum. 8-)
